Citizens is an ongoing series of paintings based on portrait photographs taken between 1930 and 1990 in Europe. These tiny prints, found in boxes under tables in flea markets and usually anonymous, would have been used as keepsakes as well as for identification papers, arrest records, passes and passports. They testify to the labyrinthine requirements and risks of citizenship during a century of competing ideologies and global political conflict.
